The Fort Worth, Texas, screamo band Dead Butterflies released their four-song album “that feeling in your chest” back on December 24, 2024. The album explores themes of not belonging and heartbreak.

The album uses a mix of screamo and lo-fi to create beautifully devastating songs. The use of this and the way it is packaged in each song puts you in both a calming headspace, but also intensifies you.

The album has a relaxing melody and beat, but is intensified with the amazing and intense vocals of Micah Zimmer. The melody and beat also intensify alongside the vocals, which puts you in a state of bliss.

I enjoyed all four songs on the album. They each cover different but similar themes about love and loneliness perfectly. The interchange of intensity and calmness in each song created a feeling of frisson for me. It tapped into a part of me that made my heart beat faster, made my skin tingle, and put me in a calm state of mind — which is an especially unique sensation.

The order of the album makes for a wonderful listening experience. Each of the four songs are great, but the order in which they’re arranged makes for an even better listening experience. The starting song, “solace in solitude” is a great start to the album, which puts you in the right mood for the rest of the songs. The following two songs help express the aforementioned intensity, primarily with the screamo-heavy “paintings!” and the slightly more calming “due to fear.” The album ends with my personal favorite song — and longest — “embers.” This song manages to comprise all of the amazing elements of the album into one. Even with the long runtime of the song — there isn’t a single moment of boredom in it.

The entire EP is uniquely Dead Butterflies. It is a moving album that captures the angst and agony of the band. An album that breathtakingly captures electronic screamo.
